Kris Boyd: Rangers could not replace Allan McGregor even if they spent £50m

Kris Boyd is confident that Allan McGregor will sign a new deal at Rangers and argues that the goalkeeper is irreplaceable.

The 39-year-old is picked week in week out by Steven Gerrard but his contract expires at the end of the season.

Boyd believes holding onto the shot-stopper is vital as it will allow the transfer budget to be spent in other areas.

Also, he suggests his former teammate is still at the top of his game and 16 clean sheets this season shows how good he’s been.

Boyd told Sky Sports Scottish Football Podcast, “He’s been outstanding for a number of years now. It won’t be long before he signs a new deal, there is no doubt about that.

“For what you’ve got in the building right now, you ain’t going to replace him. It doesn’t matter if you go and spend £30m, £40m, £50m you ain’t going to replace him.

“It allows Steven Gerrard and Rangers to go and spend the money elsewhere to strengthen their team because there is nobody better.

“He’s 39-years-old but he’s still phenomenal.”

Bold claim

McGregor has been superb this season and over the last few weeks has somehow managed to get even better, pulling off magnificent saves in key games against Celtic, Royal Antwerp and now Slavia Prague.

He also provides attributes in the dressing room that will be difficult for Steven Gerrard to replace.

That being said, we think Boyd is exaggerating when suggesting £50million would not be enough to replace the shot-stopper.

We understand that it would be useful to spend on other positions in the squad by keeping McGregor, but he has to retire at some point.

The ideal course of action would be to tie him down to another year but sign a goalkeeper who will be ready to replace him full-time for the 2022/23 season.

Bringing in a young player who can learn from the veteran would be ideal as we also have a strong second keeper in Jon McLaughlin.

That would set us up for long-term success without having to break the bank.
