Alan Hutton claims Allan McGregor will now focus on sealing a new contract at Rangers with the Premiership title secured.

McGregor, 39, was in stunning form for the Light Blues on Thursday night as he made a world-class save late on to earn a 1-1 draw away at Slavia Prague in the Europa League.

As it stands, the goalkeeper’s contract at Ibrox expires this summer but, speaking on BT Sport 3 after the last-16 tie in Prague on Thursday, Hutton shared some inside knowledge on the shot-stopper and his thought process.

Host Darrell Currie said: “You can’t imagine the negotiations would take long because he wants to stay. You know him well Alan. Come on, tell us.”

Hutton, who played alongside McGregor at Ibrox, replied by saying: “Every time I spoke to him, it was always, ‘look, we’re focussing on the next game, we’re not concentrating on the contracts stuff’.

“That’s out of the way now, they’ve won the league. Now let’s talk about him staying because he’s been unbelievable this season.

“He’s one of the top players, top performers and he thoroughly deserves a new deal.”

Player of the season?

You wouldn’t think McGregor turns 40 next year with the way he managed to keep that header out late on against Slavia Prague.

Not only was it down low to his left and seemed to be behind McGregor, but the Scottish ‘keeper also managed to hold onto the ball and stop it going out for another corner or, worse, dropping to a Slavia attacker.

It was sensational and the more we’ve watched it, the more we think it’s the greatest save made in the history of football.

Hutton clearly wants McGregor to stay on at Ibrox. They still talk with one another and as expected, the goalkeeper has been rather hush on his contract situation at Ibrox.

But surely with the title won and things going well in the Europa League, there’s a good chance for him to sit down with Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard to thrash out new terms.

McGregor might be 40 next January but we believe he’s got at least one or two more years left in him.

In other Rangers news, Celtic have released a bitter and hypocritical statement aimed at the Gers amid doubts about the next Old Firm game.
