Ally McCoist: Rangers success could prise players away in the summer
Rangers could become victims of their own success and Steven Gerrard should be braced for a couple of key exits this summer, according to Ally McCoist.
The Light Blues have swept all before them this season and have had stars across the pitch, something Gers record goalscorer McCoist thinks could go against them in the transfer market.
Appearing on BT Sport 3 [17:30, 11/03/21] prior to Slavia Prague and Rangers drawing 1-1, McCoist revealed his summer fears.
“Recruitment is key, he’s (Steven Gerrard) intelligent enough and been in the game long enough to know you don’t stand still, you’ve got to move forward,” he said.
“You’ve got to plan. It’s one thing getting there, you’ve got to stay there, you’ve got to improve.
“Performances in the Europa League have been fantastic but the Champions League is a different ball game.
“I’ll be interested to see players coming in and I don’t want to tempt fate but [Gerrard] might lose one or two because of the success that they’ve had…it wouldn’t surprise me.”
Suffering with success
We’re split on this – on the one hand the platform that our success has given players will obviously have alerted other clubs, some who have bigger pockets to empty money into bank accounts at will.
Players are not mercenaries for wanting more money and the wages that clubs at the top of the Premier League can offer blow ours out the water.
Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent are perhaps the most valuable players in terms of profile given their ages (both are 24-years-old).
Both have offered good service to the club and we wouldn’t stand in the way if they decided to head for pastures new.
They might want to do this, but they also may have witnessed the recent scenes and adjusted their view on how high this club can go.
We think the sky is the limit for the Light Blues under the superb stewardship of Gerrard and with a Champions League campaign waiting at the start of next season, this could entice players to stay at Ibrox.
McCoist is right to be fearful as we all are but perhaps this fear could start to subside, particularly if we progress further in the Europa League.
Even if players do depart, we back Gerrard and co to bring in some stars of their own to continue our ascent to being back as a European powerhouse.
