Sky Sports angered by lack of coverage following Rangers title victory

Sky Sports bosses are reportedly “furious” with Rangers for the lack of access following the club’s 55th title celebrations last weekend.

The Gers claimed their first league title victory since 2011 on Sunday as Celtic failed to beat Dundee United following Rangers’ win over St Mirren the day before.

However, Sky Sports haven’t enjoyed the celebrations as much as the Rangers fan base have, with the TV giants furious to have not been given more access to Steven Gerrard and his players.

Rangers

According to The Scottish Sun, Sky are in talks with the SPFL and Rangers after being left fuming when, among other things, Gerrard spoke exclusively to ITV earlier this week.

Sky Sports struck a £125million TV deal to broadcast Scottish football last summer, and as such they had believed they’d be entitled to more coverage following Rangers’ title victory.

The Scottish Sun cite a Sky source as saying: “We are disappointed with the lack of access we have had from Rangers in the last three days and we are in dialogue with both them and the SPFL to try to resolve the issue.

“Steven Gerrard spoke to ITV, which he is entitled to do. But as domestic broadcast rights partner with the SPFL, starting a new five-year deal last summer, it’s fair to say we expected greater access.

“We want to work through this and reach a resolution.”

Rangers

Not our problem

For Rangers fans everywhere, Sky Sports’ issues with the club won’t matter in the slightest, especially not considering how long we’ve waited to win this title.

Of course we understand Sky’s frustrations, but ultimately it shouldn’t detract from what that this team has accomplished this season. Their success has been incredible to watch, even more so given that Celtic themselves have faltered throughout the season.

Gerrard and his squad absolutely deserve all of the adulation for taking Rangers back to the pinnacle of Scottish football, and it would be a shame if exclusive rights and expectations from TV broadcasters came to overshadow that for some people.

We want to enjoy our success and look towards a bright future with the club clearly heading in the right direction, and so hopefully this situation sorts itself out peacefully and organically, so that more focus has been given to what a brilliant achievement this season has been.

If Sky wanted more access, we presume they only had to ask? They’re not the BBC.

In other Rangers news, Dave King expects there to be a lot of movement in and out of Ibrox this summer.
