McGregor says Rangers ‘have the belief’ to go further in Europa League

Allan McGregor says Rangers have the belief to go further in the Europa League after a solid 1-1 draw away to Slavia Prague.

The Rangers stopper, 39, rolled back the years with one of the saves of the season in the dying moments. It enabled Steven Gerrard’s side to take a draw back to Ibrox ahead of the second leg.

Speaking to BT Sport 3 after the match, McGregor also claimed he saw the effort slightly late, making the save even more impressive. He said: “A wee bit late. It’s just one of those things.

“You react to it, see it, stick your hand out, hope it doesn’t go in and it never. Happy days.

“We have the belief (to progress), but we’re up against a good side so it’ll be difficult. But we have the belief to do it. We want to do it obviously.

“You go into every game especially at this club wanting to win it, and every competition.”

McGregor will surely go down in Rangers folk law once he hangs up his gloves. He isn’t ready yet though, and no secret has been made of his contract expiring at the end of this current season.

The keeper is approaching 300 appearances for the club after 14 years of combined service over his career. His first 11 years with the club came between 2001-2012, before resigning from Hull City in 2018.

He’s played an integral role in Gerrard’s side this season, as Rangers have gone undefeated in the league and Europa League so far. McGregor has made 32 appearances in all competitions, contributing greatly towards league title number 55.

They could still push on for more silverware this season after a strong performance in the Czech Republic. Nicolae Stanciu scored a belter after seven minutes played, but Filip Helander tapped in half an hour later to take an away goal back to Ibrox.

Up next for Rangers is the Old Firm clash at Celtic Park on the weekend. Does a guard of honour await?

In other Rangers news, Charlie Adam has slammed ‘sloppy’ Joe Aribo for his first-half performance away to Slavia Prague.
