Rangers edgy over Gerrard future amid Liverpool & Klopp updates
Jurgen Klopp could quit Liverpool if he isn’t offered assurances about being backed financially in the summer transfer window and that has caused unease behind the scenes at Rangers, according to GiveMeSport.
The football news website claims Steven Gerrard will be Liverpool’s “first-choice target” if Klopp walks away from Anfield but for now, the Gers are hoping there is no sudden change at the reigning Premier League champions that would pave the way for an approach for the Ibrox boss.
Klopp has this week ruled himself out of the running to be the next Germany manager [ESPN] after it was confirmed Joachim Low will leave the national team after the European Championships this summer.
GiveMeSport claims that Rangers figures are hoping things do not worsen at struggling Liverpool as some people high up at Ibrox are “somewhat edgy”.
Are we worried?
Gerrard has another three years left on his contract at Rangers and Klopp has the same amount of time left on his deal at Anfield.
Liverpool have shown incredible patience with Klopp in the past.
In his debut season at Anfield, the Reds finished eighth in the Premier League and lost EFL Cup and Europa League finals to Manchester City and Sevilla respectively.
They then finished fourth two seasons in a row, losing the Champions League final in the process.
While they were achievements to get to the finals of these tournaments, three final defeats and failed title bids will have tested the nerve of many club owners across the country and the rest of Europe.
But they stuck with Klopp and are likely to this season now they have won the Premier League and Champions League with the German.
It all depends on what Klopp wants to do but we really do not see him quitting on the Merseyside club unless something better comes along.
That means Gerrard’s job at Rangers should be safe.
We cannot say we’re 100 per cent sure he won’t go anywhere in the next year but we’re not concerned about his future at all.
A new contract wouldn’t go amiss to kill all this speculation though.
In other Rangers news, Paul Merson’s made a ridiculous claim about Gerrard’s future.
