Green Party leader suggests Rangers should be shut down for foreseeable future

Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson claims Rangers fans scored a “monumental own goal” at the weekend for their title-winning celebrations in Glasgow.

On Sunday, the Gers were confirmed as Premiership champions after Celtic drew 0-0 with Dundee United, ending a 10-year wait for title number 55.

However, the celebrations caught the eye of Scotland’s politicians and according to Jackson, one suggests that Rangers’ season should be brought until a halt.

“A monumental own goal scored by Rangers supporters over the weekend, when they poured on to the streets of Glasgow to demonstrate the depth of their own passion for their club, was being volleyed around the House on the Hill yesterday like a political football as one MSP after another took turns to sink the boot in,” Jackson wrote on the Daily Record website.

“At one point the leader of the Green Party appeared to be suggesting the Ibrox club should be shut down for the foreseeable future or at least for as long as the country continues to be held in lockdown, waiting for this killer pandemic to pass.

“Meanwhile, the First Minister was busy doubling down on threats to wade into the argument by suggesting, from behind the thinnest of veils, the staging of the next Old Firm showdown, scheduled for Celtic Park in less than two weeks’ time, is now a matter of some genuine doubt.”

Tough decisions for everyone

What’s happened has already happened and the biggest celebrations and gatherings of Rangers fans is likely to be over.

While we can understand why fans wanted to celebrate after a decade’s worth of disappointment and frustration, there is a bigger picture to all of this.

If we want things to return to normal then staying at home and following the Government’s advice, whether you think it’s stupid or not, is the best way forward.

We want to be back at Ibrox before the season ends but at this rate, it’s not going to happen.

Rangers

South of the border, Premier League fans might be able to watch their teams play live for the final two game weeks of the season. There hasn’t been anything like the celebrations we saw in Glasgow at the weekend but at the end of last season, we saw fans from Liverpool, Leeds and West Brom gathering in the streets and stadiums to celebrate their successes.

Celtic supporters have also done it this season but there’s wasn’t a celebration, it was to demand that several people lose their jobs.

Instances with Rangers and Celtic fans are far more recent than anything that’s happened in England and it could put us back a long way in terms of going to matches again.

Let’s hope the season isn’t postponed or the club is sanctioned because at the end of the day, it’s not as though the club conceded the celebrations or welcomed them. People were going to make their way outside to celebrate no matter what.

And it would have happened no matter which team won the title this season.

To single out Rangers is totally unfair.
