Low to quit Germany, could have major Rangers repercussions
Joachim Low will quit as Germany manager after the European Championships this summer and that could have a massive impact on Steven Gerrard’s future at Rangers.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday morning, Sky Sports Italy’s transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported that Low will step down from his role in charge of Germany a year before his contract expires.
It might not seem it at first glance but this is deeply troubling news for Rangers fans, just days after they secured title number 55.
That’s because Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keen on the Germany job once Low leaves.
Last month, the Mirror reported that the Premier League and Champions League-winning manager is the “outstanding candidate” to become the next Germany manager and the German Football Association “will make their approach once Low’s own future is sealed”.
It seems Low’s future is sealed based on Romano’s earth-shattering update, which could have serious implications at both Anfield and Ibrox.
Rangers boss Gerrard is reportedly wanted by Liverpool to succeed Klopp in the Anfield dug-out should the German move on.
The Mirror claims Klopp would find it hard to turn down the Germany job and Liverpool’s principal owner John W. Henry and chairman Tom Werner have been keeping close watch over Gerrard’s work in Glasgow.
Gerrard led Rangers to their first post-admin title at the weekend, which was a massive achievement given how Celtic have dominated Scottish football for the last nine years.
The ex-England midfielder has turned himself into a true Ibrox legend and to see him leave so soon after his success would be a crushing blow.
We hope Klopp stays at Liverpool simply for the sake of Gerrard staying at Ibrox.
Let’s hope that either Germany go for someone else or Liverpool avoid Gerrard.
He’s got unfinished business up here in Glasgow.
