Graham Spiers tears some Rangers fans to sheds of celebrations

Times journalist Graham Spiers has dubbed some Rangers fans as a “thorough embarrassment” for their behaviour in Glasgow at the weekend.

Steven Gerrard’s men secured the Premiership title on Sunday when Celtic drew 0-0 with Dundee, sparking Gers fans to celebrate all across the city.

There were reports of fights breaking out between Rangers fans [Scottish Sun] and while Spiers can understand the celebrations due to what the club has gone through, he cannot condone those who have gone a step too far.

“I’ve gone out my way to cut Rangers fans some slack this weekend: years of pent-up anger and bitterness being released following a title win,” Spiers wrote via his personal Twitter account on Monday.

“But these reports of loutish behaviour in Glasgow last night are beyond defending.

“A thorough embarrassment.”

No room for idiocy

We’re in the same boat as Spiers with regards to the celebrations at the weekend.

At the end of the day, we’re Rangers fans who are over the moon to see the club win the title for the first time since administration in 2012 and we can understand why people packed the streets to celebrate.

Celtic and Liverpool fans have done it, as did Leeds and West Brom fans when they won promotion to the English Premier League last season.

It’s no different from what Rangers fans have done although probably not on the same scale with celebrations erupting all across Glasgow.

But the clips of fans fighting is embarrassing, so we have to agree with Spiers on that too.

It shows that some of the celebrations have gotten out of hand and this is all ammunition for Celtic fans in the future.

Sometimes, our fans do not help themselves. For every 99 good things that come from our fanbase, there’s one bad thing and that bad thing is what will make the headlines, get pundits and journalists talking and feed the hatred towards us.

We don’t mind rival fans hating us, but seeing the club’s name and the reputation of our fans dragged through the mud is what we don’t like.
