talkSPORT host Adrian Durham promised that his English Premier League side of the season would contain a couple of “leftfield picks”.
However, we weren’t expecting Ryan Kent to pop up on the wing.
Co-host Darren Gough said Durham had “lost the plot” but he was unrepentant saying Kent has been “one of the best players I’ve seen all season” and asking “why wouldn’t I put him in my side?”
“Because he doesn’t play in the Premier League”, said Gough.
It’s a fair point but we’re still thrilled to see Kent being mentioned alongside the best in the UK.
“You’re not going to believe my leftfield pick,” Durham said on Drive (talkSPORT, Tuesday, 6pm).
“He doesn’t even play in the Premier League. It’s Ryan Kent from Rangers. He’s been brilliant for Rangers this season.
“I think he’s been one of the best players that I’ve seen this season.
“He deserves to be there all day long.”
Premier League quality
When he’s at his best, Kent is definitely among the best in the UK and there have been calls from some quarters that he should be considered for England.
He’s had a bit of a slump in form at times this season but he’s still scored 11 goals and added 13 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.
Durham put Kent in on the wing ahead of a number of brilliant players, including Raphinha from Leeds. He’s being talked about as a £40m/£50m player after signing for Leeds for £17m.
Kent cost Rangers less than £7m and that has to go down as one of the best bits of business we’ve done in recent years.
Gers have been commended for picking up brilliant players in incredibly cheap deals or for free, like Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara.
But it’s absolutely vital that when we spent big, like we did for Kent, we get it right.
It might be a stretch to say he should be in the Premier League side of the season, purely because he doesn’t play there, but Durham’s leftfield pick proves what a fantastic player he is.
