We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has fired a warning at Rangers playmaker Joe Aribo after he admitted to bulking up in recent months at Ibrox.
The Nigerian international has recently claimed he needed to improve his physicality to cope with the demands of the Scottish Premiership.
McLeish has claimed that Aribo can’t bulk up too much, as he could lose some of his natural speed, before insisting he is “destined for greatness.”
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Brilliant, that’s a sign and the makings of a fantastic professional.
“I think the managers will always be wary and this is where they can get guidance from the sports science team, where you can bulk up too much.
“There are things you should be doing, and things you shouldn’t, you don’t want to get too bulky where you lose your speed, but I think he’s naturally strong anyway, he shrugs people off with his great skill.
“He’s definitely a guy that is destined for greatness.”
Whatever Aribo is doing, it is clearly working.
The 24-year-old has been sensational in recent months in all competitions and has nailed down the playmaker spot in the midfield three.
According to WhoScored, only James Tavernier has a better average match rating in the entire Bears squad, better than the likes of Conor Goldson.
Steven Gerrard has brought the best out of Aribo, and the exciting thing is that he is only going to get better with more experience.
