We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has urged Rangers to ignore an emergency transfer in the absence of captain James Tavernier this month.
Steven Gerrard claimed he could look to bring in a fresh face to help cover the skipper, with his replacement Leon Balogun also currently injured.
Nathan Patterson could face SFA charges for breaching COVID-19 protocols but did come off the bench to score against Royal Antwerp last week.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “There were talks of steven getting a replacement, a loan maybe with Tavernier being out.
“But, he’s got that boy right under his wing and he’s come up with the goods and that sometimes when you throw him in like that and you see the potential is tremendous.”
Patterson hit back with the perfect response last week.
The young right-back had been massively criticism in the past fortnight, with many even calling for his Rangers career to be ended despite his recent new contract.
Instead, Gerrard was forced to throw him into the action in the Europa League off the bench, and he repaid him, scoring after only 16 seconds on the pitch.
It will be interesting to see what happens with both Tavernier and Balogun out injured, but this is a massive opportunity for Patterson starting with Livingston away on Wednesday.
