Darren Bent warns Steven Gerrard to stay at Rangers and learn from Lampard failure

Darren Bent believes Steven Gerrard is already in the right place at Rangers and must bide his time before leaving for Liverpool later in his career.

He thinks Gerrard should wait “a couple more years” before taking another job.

With Liverpool languishing sixth in the Premier League rumours have started to swirl over Jurgen Klopp’s future as manager and the same old links to Gerrard getting the job have been doing the rounds as people try and put two and two together.

The Gers boss is currently leading the club to a season for the ages as the Light Blues remain unbeaten in 30 Premiership matches on the way to title number 55, while Europa League glory is not out of the question with only Slavia Prague standing between them and a quarter-final tie.

Appearing on talkSPORT’s ‘Drive with Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent’ [4pm, 27/02/21] the former England international ruled out Gerrard taking over at the Merseyside club and said: “I’d still wait a couple more years and then I’d probably take another job.

“That Liverpool job… he [Gerrard] is an absolute legend of Liverpool Football Club and the Premier League.

“It’s not like the [Frank] Lampard opportunity where that was just perfect. Him and Jody Morris, Jody Morris already knew all the kids they already had, so that role fitted perfectly.

“For Steven Gerrard, there’s time on his hands.

“I fully understand Chelsea do things differently. If you’re not doing it for six months, you’re gone.

“But he still would have looked at that Lampard situation and gone, ‘maybe not quite yet.’”

Hands off

We can’t see Gerrard going anywhere any time soon.

For one the chances of Klopp leaving Liverpool seem remote to say the least and therefore the option to go there is unlikely to even come up for a few years.

If the notion of an emotional return to the club he served with such distinction during his playing days is what might sway Gerrard away from Ibrox, then all should be fine if that job does not open up.

Because where else would he go?

Is he really going to get a job at a bigger club than ours?

Gerrard has restored us as the dominant team in Scotland and a side challenging the top teams in Europe.

With fans being absent from our success over the past 12 months we think he will be desperate to experience the buzz of a fully-packed Ibrox again.

He’s here to stay for a good while yet.
