Rangers are on course for a successful campaign both domestically and in Europe and David Provan pinpointed the key change they have made.
He praised the defensive improvement, with Gers conceding just nine goals in 30 league games.
Provan highlighted centre-backs Conor Goldson and Filip Helander as two major contributors but also praised the work of coach Micahel Beale.
He told the Go Radio Football Show (24/02, 14:08), “It’s remarkable how few goals they’re losing.
“If you’re keeping the back door shut you’ve got half a chance, that for me is the biggest difference.
“The two centre-backs have been fabulous this season, they were fragile at times last season, they are a different proposition this year.
“I don’t think Steven Gerrard would mind me mentioning Michael Beale.
“Apparently he does a lot of the coaching and it reflects very well on him that Rangers have been transformed from a side who were known to leak poor goals to a side who defensively are right on the money now.”
Does Beale deserve more recognition?
It would be brilliant to be a fly on the wall at the Rangers training ground.
Steven Gerrard has undoubtedly done a superb job but it would be very interesting to see how hands-on he is day in day out.
He sets the standard and knows his tactics, but the improvement in the defence may mainly be thanks to Beale.
Gerrard praised the expertise of his coach not long ago, stating it would take him 15-20 years to deliver the type of training sessions Beale puts on.
That suggests Beale is not getting the full credit he deserves, so it is good of Provan to pay him recognition.
Our defenders should also be praised for the hard work and individual improvement they have made.
Leon Balogun’s performances at right-back in the last two games show we have benefitted from having experienced top-class defenders at our disposal.
Ultimately, Gerrard deserves credit as he lured Beale to Ibrox from Liverpool, as his judgment has well and truly paid off.
