Rangers fans react to Filip Helander display in 4-3 win v Royal Antwerp

Rangers fans have blasted centre-back Filip Helander for his performance against Royal Antwerp on Thursday night.

Steven Gerrard’s men ensured they would hold a lead going into the second leg of their Europa League knock-out tie at Ibrox after a thrilling 4-3 win away in Belgium.

Borna Barisic’s late goal from the penalty spot sealed the victory for the Light Blues, who looked very dangerous in the attack all night.

However, at the back, it was left to goalkeeper Allan McGregor again to do the bulk of the work as the defence simply failed to impress against one of the weaker teams left in the Europa League.

Helander, 27, is someone who has come in for a lot of criticism from section of Rangers fans on Twitter after the match, with one claiming that he was “all over the place” defensively in Antwerp.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

It’s not as though Gerrard is going to be able to leave Helander out of any matches coming up due to James Tavernier’s injury on Thursday night.

Leon Balogun, who has swapped spots at centre-back with Helander this term, came in to play at right-back and did a decent job while playing out of his comfort zone on the right-hand side of the defence.

If Tavernier is out for some time, the only spare centre-back that could be available for Gerrard will be new signing Jack Simpson and he’s barely kicked a ball in senior football in his entire career.

It’s a worrying situation but we hope Helander is able to pick up his form sooner rather than later.
