George Edmundson endured a hellish last few months at Ibrox but the Rangers loanee bounced back to make his Derby County debut on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old had not played a competitive game of football since a substitute appearance in a 5-1 thrashing over Motherwell on September 29 before taking to the field for the Rams in Tuesday’s 2-1 win at Wycombe Wanderers.

He came on for the injured Matt Clarke just before half-time and helped his team to a vital victory that sends them six points clear of the Championship relegation zone and now just 12 points behind the play-off positions.

Rangers

Edmundson joined Rangers from Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2019 and made 15 appearances in his maiden Light Blues campaign.

But things threatened to turn sour when, alongside Jordan Jones, he was banned for seven games in November after breaching covid-19 protocols for attending a party.

Jones was shipped out to Sunderland on loan in January while Edmundson had to wait until deadline-day before sealing a temporary switch to Derby.

He’s had to wait his turn to make his debut with manager Wayne Rooney opting to keep faith with the tried and trusted duo of Clarke and Andrew Wisdom but the former’s first-half injury opened up an opportunity for Edmundson and he seemed determined to take it.

His side were leading 1-0 at the time of his introduction and though Wycombe equalised via a penalty early into the second half of proceedings Edmundson helped to withstand some pressure from a Wycombe outfit who registered eight shots before Wisdom netted a last-minute winner.

Rangers

After Jack Simpson was brought in from Bournemouth to add to the existing centre-back quartet of Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun and Nikola Katic, it remains to be seen whether there is a future at Ibrox for the shamed Edmundson.

However last night will have acted as a reminder that he is still a capable defender despite a long absence from playing.
