We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has claimed that Hamilton’s astroturf pitch could have forced Steven Gerrard to drop Rangers midfielder, Ryan Jack.
The midfielder has struggled with injuries this season at Ibrox and was dropped to the bench for the 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.
McLeish has claimed that Hamilton could have been handed an advantage with the pitch, although it was no excuse for the Bears.
Speaking to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Yes, that’s very, very possible.
“Some players don’t play on astroturf, Ryan Fraser is one of those back in the Scotland days.
“Astroturf is completely different, and they can be a very good advantage to the home team – they not only play on it every week, but they also train on it because it has that longevity.
Jack is always a massive miss.
The 28-year-old missed a huge part of the season over Christmas and made an instant impact on his return by scoring in that huge win over Ross County.
Bongani Zungu came into midfield for a rare start, and he would have left Gerrard down massively with his shocking performance.
With Kilmarnock coming up on Saturday, it is almost a certainty that Jack will be starting after Gerrard admitted he made many mistakes.
Jack could only complete 30 minutes against Hamilton, and we’re hoping that he can finish the full 90 over the weekend, the Bears are a different animal with him in the side.
