Rangers handed major Morelos boost after significant update from authorities – report
An update from FIFA means Rangers star Alfredo Morelos may not have to travel to play for Colombia next month, report The Sun.
The striker is in line for a call-up for World Cup qualifying matches against Paraguay and Brazil at the end of March.
He has six caps to his name but Rangers may prevent him from travelling this time round due to Covid-19 fears.
Colombia is on the UK’s red list and that means Morelos would have to isolate for ten days upon his return to Glasgow.
FIFA have ruled that elite athletes do not have to travel to such countries, so the Gers can prevent Morelos travelling.
Big boost
It is probable that Rangers will have won the Scottish Premiership title by the time the next international window rolls around.
That means they may allow Morelos to do as he wishes, but at least we now have the power to say no.
After all, we could still be in the Europa League by that point.
The quarter-finals take place in early April and that means a period of ten days of quarantining would likely hinder Morelos’ fitness, and his chances of featuring.
Worse still, travelling to Colombia arguably increases his chances of catching Covid, and that risks an outbreak at Auchenhowie.
Steven Gerrard should deny Morelos travel, therefore, even if it risks upsetting the player, who is likely keen to play more for his country.
Against St. Johnstone it was clear how much we missed Morelos.
Kemar Roofe took his place but was not the same player as he is on the wing, with a number of weaknesses in his display almost costing us three points.
We do not want to be without Morelos again.
