Ibrox View: Gerrard gave SFA no choice over Roofe decision

Steven Gerrard’s recent quotes have given the Scottish FA no choice over the decision the potentially hand Rangers’ Kemar Roofe a two-game ban.

The forward could be banned for his challenge on Murray Davidson on Wednesday even though he was booked at the time by the referee.

Gerrard recently demanded more consistency from the SFA following the decision to hand Alfredo Morelos a ban for stamping on Ryan Porteous.

The Gers boss is quoted by BBC Sport as saying, “It is something we will continue to try to be a support to in terms of the authorities, to try and make things better and more consistent.”

This comment has essentially given the SFA no choice over the decision to cite Roofe and the organisation may be making a point to Gerrard.

We don’t think that any further action should’ve been taken against Roofe or Morelos but the Roofe decision is baffling.

A yellow card is easily punishment enough as there was no intent to harm the player from Roofe, it certainly doesn’t constitute ‘serious foul play’.

The SFA has been so inconsistent this season when citing players and this is what prompted the Gers boss’ comments.

But it seems like they have gone too far the other way with this decision as there is no way that the challenge needed further scrutiny.

It is not hard to make the link between Gerrard’s comments and the SFA’s decision and perhaps the governing body have responded here.

Of course, the SFA should no way be influenced by a manager’s comments but that is the only thing that could’ve made them decide to cite Roofe.

The decisions this organisation makes are baffling at the best of times and it is harder to reject the notion of a Rangers agenda when things like this happen.

Though we think that Gerrard’s comments, on this occasion, made the SFA’s decision to cite Roofe very easy.
