Alex McLeish: Rangers mainstay set for new contract at Ibrox – Exclusive
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish believes it is only a matter of time until Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor signs a new contract at Ibrox this season.
The veteran goalkeepers’ current deal runs out at the end of this season, and Steven Gerrard has already shared his desire to extend it.
McLeish believes that McGregor is performing at Champions level, and has played a massive role in the Bears charging towards 55.
Asked whether McGregor will be on the verge of a new deal, McLeish exclusively to Ibrox News “Yes, I believe so.
“If he’s not got any underlying issues in terms of his knees, his hips, his back or anything because old age does catch up with you sometimes.
“McGregor looks as if he’s going to be able to go on above 90-years-old, he’s playing at a great level, and he’s playing at Champions level.”
McGregor has been phenomenal this season.
It would be easy to suggest that he has had little to do during this incredible run, but he has single-handedly dragged Rangers to three points on more than one occasion.
The 38-year-old made numerous saves against St Johnstone on Wednesday, but his efforts against Willem II in the Europa League and Celtic in the previous Old Firm may not be topped.
The Bears have kept 21 clean sheets this season, only conceding only seven goals in 27 games, something McGregor must be rewarded for.
