‘A bravery thing’ – McAllister highlights what he loves about new Rangers signing
Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has said that he’s a big fan of the flair players at the club, and name-checked Scott Wright in that group.
Wright signed on deadline-day and was named on the bench for that game, and will be hoping to make his debut against Hamilton on Sunday.
As reported by The Scotsman, McAllister said, “We have Kemar Roofe, Kenty (Ryan Kent), and Scott Wright who we have just signed.
“These are the sort of players who we need to show that imagination and that cuteness. It is a bravery thing as well.
“These guys are the first to get criticised when things don’t go well, the flair player is the one people say ‘he is not working that hard’.
“But I like that we have guys who take the risk.”
Matching Kent
Wright will be determined to break into the Rangers starting line-up but he first must prove himself in training or from the substitutes bench.
The likes of Hagi, Roofe and Kent are rated highly by McAllister, and by Gerrard also.
It will be tough for Wright to replace one of the trio in the starting line-up.
In order to do so he must target the level of performance of Kent, as the winger’s output in the final third this season is something to behold.
He has not always displayed consistency but the 24-year-old has averaged two key passes and two successful dribbles per game this term (WhoScored).
None of his teammates can match that standard in both departments, although Borna Barisic and James Tavernier have achieved more key passes (WhoScored).
As for Wright, his performances for Aberdeen in 2020/21 shows he could match Kent’s standards.
Per WyScout, the winger has 2.7 dribbles per game in all competitions, but playing for Rangers presents new challenges.
The 23-year-old will feel a new pressure to succeed at the league leaders and may find it is more difficult to express his flair and dribbling ability.
That is because opponents tend to sit deep and defend against the Gers, so Wright will not enjoy the time and space that allowed him to flourish at Aberdeen.
Despite that, we are confident about his success of success and hope he gets chances to display his talent soon.
