‘I’ve no idea’ – BBC Sportscene pundit baffled by what Rangers player did v St Johnstone
James McFadden was baffled by a miss by Connor Goldson as Rangers beat St Johnstone 1-0 at Ibrox on Wednesday night.
Although it was yet another big three points for the Gers in their bid to win their 55th league title, Steven Gerrard’s players will surely be disappointed they didn’t score more against the Saints on their home turf.
Goldson, 28, had a massive chance to score his ninth goal of the season when he hit the ball wide of the goal even though it seemed easier to hit the target.
Ex-Motherwell player McFadden was totally baffled by the miss but has praised Rangers for their ability to create chances from different situations.
“I felt as though Rangers created enough opportunities but just couldn’t take them,” McFadden said on BBC Sportscene on Wednesday night.
“This one here, Connor Goldson. I’ve no idea how he’s missed that but that’s what Rangers do. They create chances and it’s not just the same type of chance.
“They do like to get the ball wide, they like to create overloads in wide areas and put crosses into the box but they’ve got players who like to take players on like Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo.
“They’ve shown a different side to their game but credit to St Johnstone. They defended well when they had to but I’m sure Rangers will be disappointed they didn’t score a few goals in the first half.”
Narrow win the stuff of champions
It’s one of football’s most well-known cliches but it’s also very true.
Rangers were not at their best but still managed to clinch a 1-0 win against St Johnstone to continue their march towards winning the league title.
When you have off-days like that in front of goal, sometimes you draw, fail to score or even lose but Rangers haven’t been doing that lately. When they don’t play at their best, they still find a way to score.
Whether it’s a moment of magic like Ianis Hagi’s goal against St Johnstone on Wednesday or a stroke of luck like a penalty or a bad bit of defending by an opposing player. The Gers are still taking their chances, defending effectively and winning matches.
Goldson should have scored against the Saints and if that match resulted in anything other than a win then the centre-back would be getting way more criticism than he is.
We can forgive him for missing that but on another day, he’ll have to make the net ripple when he has a golden opportunity like that because things might not go the right way for his team-mates.
