‘Incredible’, ‘Ridiculous’ – Many Bears wowed after Rangers post ‘phenomenal’ team update
The defensive solidity Rangers have fostered this season has formed the backbone of their title charge and a remarkable statistic had laid that bare further.
The Light Blues beat St Johnstone 1-0 on Wednesday evening to regain their 23-point advantage over Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership with number 55 now firmly in their sights with just 11 games left to play.
Ianis Hagi was the matchwinner with a superb rasping drive from distance but the Gers also showed their capabilities at the other end with Allan McGregor in fine form.
The veteran goalkeeper has not been in the thick of it often this season with his side dominant on the ball and restricting the opposition to minimal shots but he was on hand to thwart the St Johnstone attack on a couple of occasions at Ibrox.
Per Wyscout he made three saves which is more than his per 90 average this season of 1.81, and two of these were reflex saves (the only other time he has had to make two reflex saves was against Celtic on January 2).
What is remarkable is that despite only facing three shots on Wednesday, he has only faced more on two occasions this season (four v Aberdeen and Kilmarnock in November).
Rangers have now kept a mammoth 21 clean sheets in the Premiership this season, a mouthwatering total considering they have only played 27 games thus far.
They have only conceded seven goals, while their closest challengers Celtic have let in nearly three times as many, with 20.
Along with his defence 39-year-old McGregor is standing tall and they are now among the most fearsome defences in Europe.
