Ibrox View: Magnificent individual performance went under the radar in Rangers v St Johnstone
Steven Davis’ excellent individual performance for Rangers against St Johnstone has gone under the radar but he was brilliant on Wednesday night.
The 36-year-old was exceptional in the middle of the park as the Gers picked up yet another win at Ibrox in the hunt for 55.
Ianis Hagi has stolen the headlines with his winning goal, and rightly so, but Davis ran the show in the middle.
Just look at his Wyscout heatmap, the Northern Ireland international was absolutely everywhere as he contributed going forward and at the back.
It was the complete midfield performance and his stats prove just how good he was.
The 36-year-old performed above his own average stats for this season as he took his performance to another level.
According to Wyscout, Davis completed 90% of his passes on Wednesday which is an increase on his season average of 85.9% of passes completed per 90 minutes.
Similarly, he made two progressive runs against St Johnstone when the midfielder has been averaging just one progressive run per 90 mins this season.
More defensively, Davis won 56% of his duels on Wednesday which is a significant improvement on his average of winning 48.9% of his duels per 90 minutes.
He also won 50% of his aerial duels which is an increase on the 36.1% of aerial duels he has been winning this season.
This defensive work was key as the Gers ground out a narrow win by keeping a clean sheet, though Allan McGregor has to take a fair amount of credit for that.
Overall, 77% of Davis’ actions against St Johnstone were successful which is a small improvement on the 72.4% success rate the midfielder has been averaging this season.
It was a magnificent performance and he is continuing to cement himself as one of Steven Gerrard’s best and most important players.
Many performances like this have gone under the radar this season but Davis is consistently brilliant in the heart of the Gers midfield.
We hope this form continues.
In other Rangers news, the Gers made an error in not signing this 28y/o.
