Ibrox View: Gerrard racks up 100 for Rangers – here are our 5 favourite wins so far

Wednesday’s win over St Johnstone was vital in the hunt for the Scottish Premiership title but it also brought up a very special milestone for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

The Gers dominated the game but ended up edging the contest 1-0 thanks to a superb solo effort by Ianis Hagi, a strike that sent them back 23 points clear at the top of the league.

That is an impressive number but another very magnificent record was achieved – it was Gerrard’s 100th win as Rangers manager.

Here at Ibrox News we have picked out five of our favourite victories of the Gerrard reign so far to celebrate this achievement…

Rangers 2-0 Shkupi July 12 2018

Okay so this was not a thriller by any means, up against Macedonian minnows Shkupi in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

But it marked the first win of the Steven Gerrard reign and was ultimately the start of what has led us to where we are today.

Who knows what would have happened if Rangers hadn’t got over the line here.

It wasn’t vintage but Jamie Murphy and James Tavernier did the business as Gerrard started life at Ibrox with a vital victory.

Rangers 1-0 Celtic – December 29 2018

Gerrard’s first victory over Celtic and what a great win it was.

Ryan Jack was the hero as the Gers outclassed their Old Firm counterparts and stuck the first flag in that they were plotting their rise back to the top of Scottish football.

It was the first Old Firm win since penalty shoot-out victory in the Scottish Cup in 2016 and was the first in the league since March 2012.

A massive sigh of relief for all Rangers fans as they announced themselves as back and ready to compete.

Rangers 3-2 Braga – February 20 2020

This game was exactly what fans had been waiting years for.

A big European tie against very respectable opposition in front of a rousing Ibrox, this is what Gerrard signed up for.

However, it did not start according to plan as Braga raced into a two-goal lead before the hour mark and looked like ending Gers European hopes at the first knockout stage.

In years gone by the Gers would have gone out with a whimper but not under Gerrard.

Rangers

They roared back with January signing Ianis Hagi starting the fightback before Joe Aribo equalised.

The best was to come.

Hagi’s deflected free kick into into the top corner to send Rangers fans into raptures and gave them one foot in the next round.

They ensured this did not go to waste as they beat Braga 1-0 in the return leg in Portugal to progress to the next round.

With current restrictions meaning fans are not allowed into grounds, this is a glorious memory of what it was like with thousands of adoring fans willing the team on to victory in a thrilling European tie.

Here’s hoping for more soon.

Rangers 8-0 Hamilton – November 8 2020

Eight goals and no shots for the opposing team – this was the biggest demolition job you are likely to see.

Rangers

Sure, this was a comfortable victory against a side that only had three victories to their name at the time, and who now sit bottom of the Premiership, but it saw Rangers record their biggest win under Gerrard and their biggest top-flight victory in almost 40 years.

There were braces for a trio of Gers stars – Joe Aribo, Kemar Roofe and James Tavernier all scored twice each with Scott Arfield and Brandon Barker also getting their names onto the scoresheet.

Rangers 1-0 Celtic – January 2 2021

How could we not mention the game that looks to have all-but secured number 55 for the Light Blues and shatter Hoops dreams of 10-in-a-row.

It was not Rangers at their scintillating best but that made it all the more sweeter.

Allan McGregor was a man mountain in net as he repelled any attack that came his way before Celtic captain for the day Callum McGregor put through his own net to hand the Gers a monumental victory that helped pull them 21 points clear at the top.

Rangers

What a ride it has been so far with Gerrard at the helm.

100 victories up and cruising for number 55 this season.

We can’t wait to see where the next 100 take us.

In other Rangers news, our view on which Gers ace needs to step it up after St Johnstone shocker.
