Alan Rough hits back at Steven Gerrard ‘consistency’ claims after Rangers incident
Alan Rough has hit back at Steven Gerrard’s “consistency” claims, admitting that Rangers forward Kemar Roofe should have been sent off against St Johnstone.
The Bears forward was in the middle of controversy after his attempt to shield the ball ended up with a poorly-timed tackle on Murray Davidson.
Roofe only saw yellow, with fellow PLZ pundit Hugh MacDonald agreeing that he should have been given his marching orders.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show on Thursday, Rough claimed that there are no excuses despite being little malice in the challenge.
“I can see where Steve is coming from, and Gary McAllister’s excuse that he’s a nice boy wouldn’t do him like that, that’s not debatable.
“He’s lost control of the ball, he’s lunged forward. I don’t think there’s any malice in it, but unfortunately, he’s caught the boy quite high up with his studs showing.
“For me, as Steven Gerrard says, he was looking for a bit of consistency, so it’s another red card.”
Whenever there is a controversial incident involving Rangers, the media can’t seem to let it slide for weeks – Alfredo Morelos being the prime example.
Scott Brown has been given the all-clear for his elbow on Aaron Tshibola, and with the officials taking action after the foul, Roofe should be fine.
It would be no real surprise should the SFA panel review this footage, but should they do that, they have to expect outrage from the Ibrox faithful.
We can accept the Morelos ban, but this would be a joke to change the punishment for Roofe, who made no attempt to harm Davidson.
