‘Really shocked’ – Manager lauds ‘Incredible’ Rangers 24y/o after deadline day move
Oxford United boss Karl Robinson has admitted that he was “really shocked” that he managed to sign Rangers winger Brandon Barker on loan.
The 24-year-old left Ibrox on deadline day, a move which allowed the Bears to make Scott Wright’s move from Aberdeen permanent.
Robinson claimed that Barker was his number one target, and has already been showing that he is an “incredible talent.”
Speaking to the Daily Record, Robinson admitted that he was blown away that he could tempt the winger to his club on deadline day.
“Brandon’s an incredible talent – I’m really shocked we got this one done,” he said.
“Brandon was number one on our list, but the one we thought we weren’t going to get.”
This was a move that suits all parties.
It came out of nowhere the news that Barker would be leaving Ibrox until the end of the season, but it was the perfect move to free up squad space and funds to bring in Wright immediately.
The 24-year-old had only started four games in the Scottish Premiership this season and has only completed three minutes since the New Year.
There is a sense of last-chance saloon for Barker in League One with Oxford, but it appears as though they may push to turn this switch permanent in the summer, and with promotion to the Championship a possibility, it could well happen.
Barker will have to do something extraordinary to save his Bears career, but with Gerrard already making plans for next season – it looks unlikely.
