Rangers open talks for attacker as they bid to rush through deadline-day deal – report

Rangers are chasing a deadline-day deal for Scott Wright as they seek to bring forward his summer move to Ibrox, according to the Daily Record.

Wright agreed a pre-contract deal to link up with the Light Blues in the summer after the expiry of his Dons deal only last week but it looks like he could be off sooner.

Wright was benched for Aberdeen’s trip to Livingston on Saturday but did come on for the last 12 minutes as they played out a second successive 0-0 draw.

According to the Daily Record the Gers have opened talks with their Premiership rivals over a deal that will bring Wright to Ibrox immediately rather than the summer.

However they say that Rangers will need to move quick to secure him and a deal could be more difficult given the Dons are now under less financial pressure after selling striker Sam Cosgrove to Birmingham City for £2million.

The club have less than 24 hours remaining with Monday’s midnight deadline looming large.

Gerrard seeking competition in all areas

It is a move that had been mooted but it is nevertheless surprising to see the Gers wait until a day before deadline-day before re-opening talks.

Perhaps it was after seeing Wright restricted to a fleeting appearance on Saturday and the fear that he could become marginalised at Pittodrie and only used as a substitute or when there is an injury crisis.

Either way it is a statement of intent from Steven Gerrard and co that he wants to assemble as strong a squad as possible for the rest of the season despite their scintillating start to the campaign so far that has seen the Light Blues go unbeaten in their first 26 Scottish Premiership games

Rangers can count on the likes of Ryan Kent and Ianis Hagi in wide forward positions but with the resumption of their Europa League campaign this month when they take on Royal Antwerp it looks like Gerrard is targeting strength in depth across all areas.
