Rangers 23y/o undergoing medical ahead of loan, no option to buy – reliable journo
Rangers defender George Edmundson is undergoing a medical at Derby County today ahead of a loan move until the end of the season, according to Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell.
Edmundson has been heavily rumoured to leave Ibrox this month and it seems that on deadline day he will finally get his move.
Campbell claims that Edmundson will leave on loan but Wayne Rooney’s side will not have the option to buy him at the end of the season.
On Twitter, he said, “George Edmundson is at Derby County having a medical. Will be a loan until the end of the season – no option to buy.”
Edmundson and Jordan Jones were subject of much scrutiny as they broke COVID regulations earlier this season which led to a lengthy ban.
Neither player has been selected by Steven Gerrard following the expiry of that ban and it seems their future at Ibrox is up in the air.
Jones has already departed on loan to League One side Sunderland and Edmundson looks to be joining him in the EFL, albeit in a higher league.
With no option to buy in the loan deal, it could mean that the club are planning to shop Edmundson to plenty of clubs in the summer if he has an impressive loan spell in England.
Derby aren’t exactly financially stable at the moment as a prolonged takeover saga continues to play out with players receiving late wages in recent months.
Rangers know that Derby will be unlikely to pay a fee for Edmundson in the summer but after his antics earlier in the season, there are probably few clubs who will take a punt on him.
It seems certain that Edmundson’s days as a Rangers player are over and we don’t think that not including an option to buy in his loan deal is any indication that Gerrard wants to keep him.
