Player arrives at Auchenhowie to complete Rangers transfer – report

Jack Simpson has arrived at Rangers’ training base in Auchenhowie to complete his permanent transfer to the club, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims the 24-year-old has already agreed a pre-contract to join Rangers at the end of the season when his deal at Bournemouth expires.

However, the centre-back’s move to Ibrox seems set to be completed months in advance with him now in Scotland to complete his move.

Instant defensive reinforcement

Simpson’s arrival at Ibrox on deadline day means that Steven Gerrard has another centre-back option to play with between now and the end of the season.

With Nikola Katic a long-term injury absentee and George Edmundson not in the picture and breaking COVID protocol, Gerrard has had to operate most of this season with just three centre-backs in Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun and Filip Helander.

If more than one of them was to get injured, suspended or receive a positive COVID test then that would leave Gerrard with quite a conundrum to solve within his defence.

Simpson has barely played any first-team football in his career despite being 24-years-old.

However, he is an extra body that could provide a vital layer of depth to Gerrard’s back-line as Rangers aim to win their 55th Scottish title.

Rangers are also competing in the Scottish Cup and will want to get as far as possible in the Europa League to pocket valuable income.

Simpson could have a big role to play in all that if there are any issues in the remainder of the season.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have tabled multiple last-ditch bids to sign this player on deadline day.
