Exclusive: Pundit makes ‘Incredible’ Rangers claim after January deal confirmed

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that new Rangers signing Jack Simpson could be the perfect replacement if one of the current defenders leave Ibrox.

The Bears have pounced to sign the defender from Bournemouth on a pre-contract deal, and he will arrive alongside Scott Wright in the summer.

McLeish admitted it would take an “incredible” offer for the likes of Conor Goldson to leave, but Steven Gerrard is making sure he has cover should the worst happen.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “That’s the job of the recruitment guys, and that’s where they have to be spot on.

“Rangers are capitalising on a free from Bournemouth, let the kid settle, don’t rush him and it could be one of these ones where our centre-halves get an incredible offer elsewhere to leave Rangers, but it would need to be incredible.

“Then there’s an opening for an up-and-coming young kid.”

Rangers

Rangers have great depth in defence now.

With Conor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun rotating and Nikola Katic to return from injury, that is five options to choose from with Simpson now joining too.

The 24-year-old can also play at left-back, offering great competition for the likes of Borna Barisic and Calvin Bassey.

Gerrard isn’t resting on his laurels after the dominance and is adding the perfect squad depth to make this a regular occurrence.

With Simpson and Wright through the door, Ross Wilson and his team are doing wonders this month – long may it continue.
