'Still learning' - Exclusive: McLeish claims Gerrard doing perfect job 'blooding' Rangers ace

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has admitted that Rangers playmaker Ianis Hagi is “still learning” after being dropped for the 1-0 win over Hibernian.

The Romanian made way from the side to welcome back Ryan Jack as Steven Gerrard went for the more defensive option at Easter Road.

McLeish believes that while Hagi has shown he has tonnes of ability, Gerrard is right to continue to rotate him as he carries on learning his trade in Glasgow.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “He’s still learning.

“He’s got a lot of ability that others don’t have, he’s inherited a lot of that from his father. But, again, Steven will be very aware that he doesn’t want to burn people as well and overplay them.

“Steven is doing a good job bringing him in and out, and blooding him a little, getting him used to the speed of robustness of the Scottish League – he’s learning his trades.

“It can all only help his education.”

Joe Aribo was favoured in the front three ahead of Hagi, and it was him who got the assist for Alfredo Morelos to slot home the winner.

Hagi has been superb this season and has certainly played his part in this phenomenal Bears charge towards title number 55.

The 22-year-old has scored three but assisted an incredible nine goals – the same number as James Tavernier despite playing 1035 minutes fewer.

Hagi is doing everything right, and Gerrard is managing that perfectly.
