Rangers-linked player left out of matchday squad, wants loan exit from club – reports

Rangers target Billy Gilmour was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea squad as they beat Burnley 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday.

Earlier this week, The Mirror reported in their live transfer blog [Tuesday, 07:58am] that Rangers are interested in signing their former youth player on loan for the rest of the season.

The Daily Mail has now reported Gilmour is desperate for a loan move away from Stamford Bridge after Tuchel failed to name him in his matchday squad against Burnley.

It is understood that a number of English Championship clubs want the Scotland Under-21 international in order to boost their promotion hopes but it seems Rangers could also be in the hunt for a last-ditch deal before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm on Monday.

Late deal on the cards?

If Steven Gerrard wants Gilmour then it seems there might not be a better chance to sign him.

While it might only be on loan, having the young midfielder in the squad could really help out in the final half of this season.

Rangers are competing on multiple fronts in their bid to win the Premiership title.

Gerrard’s men are still in the Scottish Cup and will also want to go as far as possible in the Europa League after reaching the knock-out stages before Christmas.

Gilmour could come in and help Gerrard keep his starting midfielders fresh for those cup and European matches with the Premiership title all but wrapped up.

Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield have had their injury issues and Darren McGregor’s stamp on Glen Kamara in the week shows that a serious injury could happen at any point.

Gilmour’s a very good central midfielder for his age and it’d be great to see him play a role in us winning title number 55, even if it would be only for a few months on loan.
