‘I’m so disgusted’ – Nacho Novo weighs in on controversy surrounding Rangers star

Former Rangers player Nacho Novo has jumped to Alfredo Morelos’ defence following criticism for his actions on Wednesday.

The striker received a charge from the Scottish FA for a stamp on Hibernian’s Ryan Porteous.

Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh piled in on the Colombian with some very controversial comments, and Novo has taken offence to what he said.

The Spaniard voiced his response on Instagram, saying, “I’m so disgusted with this man’s comments. Is this not a hate crime?”

Getting on the right path

It is good to see Novo defending Morelos as Welsh’s comments were over the line, regardless of whether he intended it as a joke.

The 24-year-old was wrong to lash out at the Hibs defender but such things happen in football, and he has received his punishment.

Morelos was lucky not to get red-carded, and his impending suspension will likely frustrate Steven Gerrard.

He has made improvements to his attitude this season but we really need him to cut out these instances of indiscipline from his game.

The 24-year-old should look to emulate Jermain Defoe, who has only picked up 65 yellow cards in his 711-game career.

Defoe as well as other experienced pros like Steven Davis and Allan McGregor should take Morelos to one side.

They can influence the striker and explain to him that there is no need to get involved in incidents like the one we saw on Wednesday – his ability is enough to get the better of defenders.

Morelos proved that against Hibs by scoring the only goal of the game, so hopefully he allows his football to do the talking for the remainder of the season.

However, there’s no doubt that Morelos gets treated differently to other players in Scotland, and the abuse from Welsh is completely out of line.
