’60k wouldn’t be enough…’ – Ally McCoist makes ‘incredible’ Rangers EPL claim as 55 in sight

Ally McCoist has backed calls for Rangers to leave the Scottish Premiership and test themselves against teams in England.

Steven Gerrard’s side are currently sweeping all before them this season after accruing a monumental 72 points from 26 games and have yet to taste defeat as they march on to title number 55.

They are set to break Celtic dreams in spectacular fashion but the difference in quality between Rangers and the rest of the pack has been stark and has reignited old calls for them to be moved to a more ‘competitive’ league where finances are much higher.

Speakin on the ‘Studs Up’ podcast [29/01/21] on Youtube the Gers’ record goal scorer McCoist was mindful of their proud Scottish history but lent his voice to the argument for leaving, saying: “I think it would be brilliant.

“How mouthwatering would Rangers, Arsenal, Celtic, Liverpool, Man City be….it would be absolutely incredible on a regular basis.

“They would have to put another tier on the Govan stand or one of the stands at Ibrox because 60,000 wouldn’t be enough.”

Here we go again…

This is a debate that has reared its head on numerous occasions in the last decades.

It is a well-known fact that the money is in the English Premier League with the vast amounts of cash distributed from TV deals and sponsorships ensuring English sides can compete with most clubs on the continent.

Moving to another league would create a vast number of geographical issues and does not seem feasible for fans factoring in midweek games and the like.

However, like McCoist mentions it would be some set of fixtures if they were to regularly come up against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United.

There is a way to ensure games like these become a more common occurrence – qualifying for the Champions League.

Rangers have enjoyed some big Europa League contests in recent seasons, coming up against the likes of Portuguese giants Benfica this season and Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen during the 2019/20 campaign but the Champions League is the holy grail and is now an achievable prospect.

The top two teams in the Premiership now qualify for the play-off places with the league winners gaining access to the third and final round.

Given the Gers are currently riding high 23 points above their nearest challengers the title seems a formality and they will be two games away from the Champions League group stage.

Let’s wait for us to get back into the big time and competing in some classic continental ties before opening up the boring English Premier League debate again.
