Rangers fans get set to celebrate 55 in style after raising over £30k for title party

Rangers fans have begun the Scottish Premiership title procession by raising over £30,000 to fund a big Red Arrows display when the trophy is lifted.

There are still double figures to go in terms of fixtures left to play but that has not stopped Gers supporters planning their party ahead of the club being crowned champions.

Rangers have not won a top-flight title since 2010-11 and the anticipation appears to have got to fans as they plot the best way to celebrate in lieu of expected covid-19 regulations preventing them from taking to the streets.

The gofundme page set up by Lee Calder was only created on Thursday afternoon but has already smashed its £14,000 target by receiving over £34,000 by more than 2,800 donors (at time of writing).

The fundraiser details say: “Bridgeton Loyal Rangers Supporters Club are attempting to raise money in order to arrange a fly over by the Red Arrows on the day the league trophy is lifted. The plan is to have the arrows fly over Ibrox, George Square and then Bridgeton in what will be a historic day by all involved at the club.”

After receiving well over the targeted amount Calder has said excess funds will be given to charities affiliated with Rangers as well as any proceeds from the day.

Too soon to start the party?

Steven Gerrard won’t thank us but the definitive answer is – no.

A 1-0 win over Hibernian at Easter Road on Wednesday ensured the Gers remain 23 points clear of nearest challengers Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership as the countdown to 55 begins.

Celtic have three games in hand on Gerrard and co but can only amass a maximum of 94 points this season.

The Light Blues, meanwhile, need just 23 points to secure the title outright and with just six points dropped so far this season this looks like a sure-fire certainty.

Gerrard will be demanding his troops keep their cool to win as soon as possible and he will also be eyeing up a season of invincibility with his side yet to lose a Premiership game this season.

The onus is on the team to maintain their focus but Gers fans cannot be blamed for starting their celebrations ahead of a historic title victory that will put paid to their Old Firm rival’s dreams of 10-in-a-row.
