Rangers 26y/o set to join English side in late loan deal, may play on Saturday – report
Jordan Jones is set to leave Rangers on loan for the rest of the season and will link up with English League One giants Sunderland, according to the Daily Mail.
The Northern Ireland international has only played four times for the Gers this season and has not appeared since he was handed a seven-game ban for breaching covid-19 regulations alongside teammate George Edmundson in November.
He only played in seven Scottish Premiership games last season for Steven Gerrard’s side as he battled injury but he did feature in six Europa League fixtures that campaign.
The Daily Mail report that the winger had a number of options to choose from in the English Championship but has chosen to join third-tier Sunderland on loan for the rest of the current season.
Jones could even sign in time to take part in Sunderland’s clash with Gillingham on Saturday.
The move will see him return to North-East England after beginning his professional career at Middlesbrough.
No sweat for Gerrard and co
It looks like Jones’ unhappy spell at Ibrox is coming to an end, at least for now anyway.
His contract expires in 2023 but his future at the club looks to be in turmoil after the breach of the guidelines alongside his failure to force his way into the first-team squad.
With Rangers recently announcing the capture of Aberdeen’s Scott Wright on a pre-contract Jones is being marginalised further and this loan move looks like a pre-cursor to a more permanent exit in the summer.
The club will hope the 26-year-old can resurrect his career down in England and drive up his price tag and interest ahead of flogging him for good before the start of next season.
With Wright set to join the likes of Ryan Kent and Ianis Hagi as wide options the future looks bleak for Jones at Rangers and a move away suits all parties.
His last game for the Gers was a brief cameo in a 2-0 home win against Livingston on October 25 and that could very well be his last game for the runaway Premiership leaders.
