Ibrox View: Stuff of dreams as Rangers handed perfect way to win title No. 55
Rangers have today been provided with an opportunity to win their 55th Scottish Premiership at the home of their greatest rivals due to a fixture switch.
As the Scottish Cup is still suspended, the SPFL have decided to move a full round of fixtures from April into the weekend which the fourth round was due to be played [Daily Record].
Steven Gerrard’s men will instead play host to Dundee United whilst second-placed Celtic will travel to Dingwall and face Ross County.
If both Rangers and Celtic win all of their games up until the Old Firm fixture, it means that the Gers will have the opportunity to clinch the title in front of their rivals in their own back yard, at Celtic Park on March 20th.
It’s the stuff of dreams.
Currently, there’s a 23 point gap between the two sides, although Celtic have three games in hand and can bring that down to fourteen points.
Gerrard’s men have been on another level this season. Of their 26 matches played they’ve picked up 23 wins and are undefeated in the Scottish Premiership.
They’re also flying in Europe. The Gers won four of their six group games, drawing twice with Portuguese giants Benfica.
In a season that began on August the first, they’ve lost just once, a 3-2 Scottish League cup defeat to St Mirren.
It’s been ten long years of hurt for the Bears who have had to see their rivals go on to win nine Scottish titles on the bounce. There’s something quite poetic about the way this seasons playing out.
Not only is it good enough to stop their rivals from going ten in a row, but to be the ones to win that title and do it on their own patch almost makes the last nine years go away.
The title could, of course, be clinched even sooner if Neil Lennon’s side are to drop points. But we bet you couldn’t find us a Rangers fan who would want the title wrapped up any sooner than March 20th.
In other Rangers news, advanced talks are being held to sign another player.
