Report details major update on Billy Gilmour situation at Chelsea amid Rangers speculation

Rangers have been handed a major boost to their hopes of re-signing Billy Gilmour on loan from Chelsea based on a new report by The Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that new Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is set to send the 19-year-old midfielder out on loan before the January transfer window closes after he was left out of the matchday squad when the London club drew 0-0 with Wolves on Wednesday.

Gilmour has played just six times in the Chelsea first-team this season and it is understood that Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation, as well as teams from outside of England.

The Mirror reported in their live transfer blog on Tuesday [07:58am] that Rangers and Napoli are keen on signing the former Ibrox ace on loan.

Now, The Telegraph adds that Tuchel is expected to loan out Gilmour to increase his chances of earning a call-up to the Scotland squad for the European Championships later this year.

Bring him home

It will be pretty tough for Rangers to get Gilmour back permanently but to just have him for the rest of this season could come in very handy.

Steven Gerrard has already seen Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack suffer with injuries this season and if Darren McGregor’s stamp on Glen Kamara on Tuesday night is anything to go by, there are likely to be more midfield setbacks as the season goes on.

Gilmour is one of the hottest young properties in British football and to have the former Rangers academy player back in Glasgow would be great to help us see out title number 55.

It would also be good for Gilmour in terms of his chances getting into the Scotland squad because Steve Clarke will no doubt be able to keep a close eye on him easier if he’s at Ibrox rather than a club in England.

Gilmour might not be a regular starter for Rangers but he will be a regular player and once the title is mathematically secured, he could play a lot so that Gerrard can use the likes of Steven Davis, Jack and Kamara in his midfield to strengthen campaigns in the Europa League and Scottish Cup.

In other Rangers news, this Hibs player has been blasted by BBC Sportscene for an incident against the Gers.
