Ibrox View: Ally McCoist makes brilliant point on Morelos controversy everyone else is ignoring
You never hear a furore like a Morelos furore.
The Rangers striker’s every move is put under the magnifying glass and there are no other players pundits go after like our striker.
We’re not saying he’s the perfect model of a football player on the pitch. But there’s a peculiar obsession in some quarters at highlighting the negative and ignoring what he does brilliantly.
Morelos was accused of stamping on Ryan Porteous in the game against Hibs last night, despite the referee seeing the incident and taking no action.
Celtic fan Alan Brazil was calling for further action on talkSPORT this morning on the Breakfast show (Thursday, 9,30am).
Ally McCoist said, “He left his foot in, the big centre-back Ryan Porteous at Hibs, there’s obviously a bit of previous between the two.
“The referee saw it and he said that he couldn’t get out of the way. The referee has a better view than me but I would have my doubts about that.”
Brazil butted in saying, “Honestly, not because it’s Rangers, not because it’s Morelos… If he gets away with that one it’s a joke, the ref doesn’t understand the game.”
McCoist then made a brilliant point.
“The problem up here is that there’s no consistency with the compliance officer,” McCoist said.
“There have been five, ten tackles that could have been brought up that haven’t been brought up, so it will be interesting to see if it is brought up.”
This is the issue that everyone else is ignoring.
The compliance officer should be looking at incidents with a neutral gaze, not looking at incidents that are talked about the most.
How can Morelos get a fair hearing with the number of people calling for his head again?
McCoist was fighting a losing battle on talkSPORT but he was the only one talking about the incident in a measured way.
It doesn’t look great in slow motion and Morelos has previous. But what Gers fans want is consistency, fairness and a level-headed approach.
Morelos shouldn’t be judged on his reputation or the strength of pundits’ feelings, but on what he’s done on the pitch.
