‘Played like internationals’ – Steven Gerrard heaps praise on Rangers trio after Hibs win

Steven Gerrard was very impressed with the display of his Rangers team against Hibernian, but reserved special praise for his midfield trio.

The Gers boss made it clear that he wanted to thank his team for the manner in which they carried out his gameplan on Wednesday night.

He was delighted with another clean sheet but the performances of Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Ryan Jack really caught his eye.

Gerrard said the trio “played like international players”, as quoted by Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell.

Experience paid off

The Gers boss suggested post-match that it was never his intention to play a technical game at Easter Road on Wednesday.

He understood that it would be a difficult contest, and it was for a number of reasons.

The quality of the pitch prevented us from playing our fluid, passing game, and with only a few days of rest since Saturday’s match fatigue was always likely to set in.

Credit must be given to Stevie G as he approached the game brilliantly, and the midfield trio controlled the action.

They were crucial to our game management after taking the lead, making a combined four interceptions.

Davis and Jack also recorded a pass accuracy of 89% and 95% respectively, while Kamara made a strong case for the Man of the Match award – earning a WhoScored rating of 7.7.

They may each play at the highest level but it is another matter to display that kind of quality in a tough midweek game away from home.

Presumably, that is why Gerrard is so delighted with what they offered.

Winning tough 1-0 games away from home is the mark of champions. And that’s what this team looks like.

Gerrard also has Scott Arfield to call upon when he returns from injury, which just highlights the strength of the squad.
