‘Cowardly’ – Tom English tears ‘Selfish’ Rangers player to shreds in win v Hibs
BBC Scotland journalist Tom English has torn into Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos after he avoided getting sent off in the 1-0 win against Hibernian on Wednesday night.
Morelos, 24, is likely to face retrospective action from the SFA – again – after he appeared to stamp on Hibs defender Ryan Porteous before later scoring the winning goal at Easter Road.
The Colombia international, who plays a balancing act between a complete liability and a match-winner every time he takes to the pitch for Rangers, was blasted by a section of Gers fans for his stamp on Porteous and BBC’s English has also taken aim at him.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night, he said: “Morelos gets away with another one. The most blatant red card. Cowardly and selfish – and unbelievably lucky.
No room for whataboutery – English is right
Whenever Morelos is blasted on social media by journalists or pundits, there are always a section of Rangers fans who resort to whataboutery to deflect attention away from their striker.
Morelos has a few screws loose – it’s nothing new to us. We know that he is a complete liability sometimes and his lack of discipline in certain games really has cost us over the years.
We cannot say that Morelos didn’t stamp on Porteous. He did. He knew exactly what he was doing and because it was a player with a history for incidents like this, that only strengthens the case against him.
Darren McGregor should have been sent off on Wednesday too for a stamp on Glen Kamara. English didn’t tweet about that but he’s also not getting into violent situations every other week like El Bufalo is. He also doesn’t play for one of the biggest clubs in Europe so there’s always going to be less attention on him.
Morelos deserves criticism. McGregor does too and you would hope the SFA look into that incident as well as the Morelos one.
If they don’t, we’ll be angry. But we’re not angry at English for pointing out a seriously nasty incident involving Alfie.
In other Rangers news, there’s been a big update on Billy Gilmour amid speculation linking him with a return to Glasgow.
