BBC Sportscene pundit blasts Hibs player for incident as Rangers win 1-0 at Easter Road
Chris Iwelumo has blasted Hibernian defender Darren McGregor for stamping on Glenn Kamara as Rangers won 1-0 at Easter Road on Wednesday night.
Most of the media’s attention has been firmly on Alfredo Morelos’ stamp on Ryan Porteous but there was a nice surprise on BBC Sportscene on Wednesday night as they also paid attention to the incident that should have seen McGregor sent off.
Former Scotland striker Iwelumo believes the Hibs man knew exactly what he was doing when he was involved in the touchline tussle with Kamara.
The BBC Sportscene pundit said: “I’m looking at that and as a player, you know that you can dodge or miss them when you’re stamping down.
“I think the referee’s not seen the stamp but has been booked for the wrestling. But again, it’s another naughty one.
“We get it slowed down but it’s the natural movement of coming down. I’m looking at that and he can easily not come down on the player there.”
Both red cards but no excuse for selective reaction
Morelos and McGregor should have both been sent off on Wednesday night and we don’t think that many people can put up a solid argument against that.
Both players knew what they were doing and, as Iwelumo said, players are able to control where they plant their foot.
But the selective reaction to the match is what winds us up the most because since the game at Easter Road, there has been a lot of coverage about the Morelos incident but not as much about the McGregor one.
We’re glad BBC Scotland actually provided some unbiased coverage for a change but guess what? Michael Stewart wasn’t on the show on Wednesday night so read into that what you will. The former Hibs man and failed Rangers trialist hasn’t even posted a tweet since the Gers’ win at Easter Road.
Rangers are on the march to the title and while we don’t want to see Morelos getting sent off, the fact that he’s shown himself up to be a match-winner again is great news is our eyes.
However, we would be surprised if he isn’t punished retrospectively and if he is, McGregor should be too.
In other Rangers news, there’s been a new twist which boosts the Gers’ chances of re-signing this player massively.
