Ex-PL player left out of matchday squad as Rangers reportedly close in on permanent deal

Jack Simpson and Nnamdi Ofoborh were both left out of the Bournemouth squad on Tuesday night amid speculation linking them with a move to Rangers.

Last week, the Scottish Sun reported that the Gers are closing in on deals to sign defender Simpson, 24, and midfielder Ofoborh, 21, on pre-contract deals ahead of their contracts expiring at Bournemouth in the summer.

Both players were left out of Jason Tindall’s matchday squad on Tuesday night as the Cherries beat Crawley in the FA Cup.

Tindall has since been quoted by the Bournemouth Daily Echo as saying:“Obviously the Rangers thing is still going on. I think Jack’s made his mind up in terms of that’s where he wants to go and play his football.

“I think that one is pretty much going to happen. Nnamdi I think is in a similar position.”

Extra depth for next season

Rangers do not really need a new centre-back right now and while there could be a need for another central midfielder like Ofoborh, we could get away without having him until pre-season training in the summer.

Ofoborh has played just five times in all competitions for Bournemouth this season and has found himself as an unused substitute on 13 occasions in the Championship.

It would probably take a while for him to get up to speed so it’s best that he’s left until the summer.

As for Simpson, the defender has featured 13 times in all competitions for the Cherries this term but he’s hardly ever played any senior football in his career.

Simpson is 24-years-old and has just 35 first-team outings to his name with 11 of those coming in the Premier League before Bournemouth were relegated last season.

We’ll see how these two players will help out at Ibrox next season but neither of them leap off the page as game-changers by any stretch of the imagination.
