Rangers want to re-sign ex-Ibrox midfielder, new twist could be major boost – report

Rangers could be handed a major boost in their bid to re-sign Billy Gilmour on loan from Chelsea, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reported in their live transfer blog on Tuesday [07:58am] that Frank Lampard was unwilling to loan out the 19-year-old midfielder amid interest from Rangers and Napoli.

However, it is understood that now Lampard has been sacked and Thomas Tuchel is set to replace him, the German boss might not share the same idea as his predecessor.

The Mirror claims Tuchel might want Gilmour to earn more game-time in the second half of the season and based on the fact he’s played just six times in the senior side this term, it could be that he’s sent out on loan.

Gilmour to help us win 55?

Chelsea signed Gilmour from Rangers in 2017 when the “highly-rated” midfielder was only 15-years-old and the Scotland Under-21s midfielder has since made 17 first-team appearances for the Premier League giants.

However, most of those appearances came last season as this term, the youngster has had to deal with a knee injury and the fact that Lampard signed players like Kai Havertz in the summer.

It was always going to be tough for Gilmour to compete with proven, senior players and that is why a loan deal makes a lot of sense.

Do Rangers need him? They could get away without signing Gilmour on loan but given the fact some of the midfielders have had injuries this season, it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world to re-sign the young ace on a temporary deal.

Steven Gerrard would be a great mentor for Gilmour due to him playing a similar role in his playing days and also that he’s coached young players in the past at Liverpool.

Gilmour would also be likely to get more game-time at Ibrox. He wouldn’t be a nailed-on start for Stevie G but you would imagine that he’ll play more in Scotland than he would in England for Tuchel, who’s bound to try and get the best out of the big-money players at Stamford Bridge to prove to Roman Abramovic he’s the right man for the job.

In other Rangers news, fans are awestruck by this young ace, claiming “he’s the new Messi”.
