Ibrox View: Lampard loves ‘awesome’ Rangers fans, he won’t go to Celtic
Celtic fans shouldn’t be getting their hopes up over appointing Frank Lampard if his previous comments about Rangers are anything to go by.
Lampard was dismissed by Chelsea on Monday after a poor run of form which has all but ruled the Blues out of this season’s Premier League title race.
Almost as soon as Lampard was gone the links to new clubs began to appear with some earmarking him to replace the ailing Steve Bruce at Newcastle.
Others looked to Scotland and saw a chance for Lampard to rebuild his credibility as a manager by taking a leaf out of Steven Gerrard’s book.
The Daily Record spoke to Lampard’s Uncle Harry Redknapp before his Chelsea sacking and he admitted that the young manager would ‘see the appeal’ of taking the reigns at Parkhead.
Neil Lennon surely doesn’t see next season after this utter failure of a campaign so when the current Hoops boss goes, will Lampard go to Celtic?
If he has any sense, no.
Lampard has come out on numerous occasions and professed his fondness for Rangers and the Ibrox faithful.
The Scottish Sun quote Lampard as once saying, “I’ve always had great respect for Walter Smith and a great fondness for Rangers.”
This was shortly before Chelsea and Rangers failed to win the Champions League and UEFA Cup respectively in 2008.
Lampard was in the crowd as the Gers lost to Zenit St Petersburg and before the game The Scottish Sun claim he said, “We’re off to Moscow and it would be a great double if Chelsea and Rangers could win the two European finals.”
This almost rules the Chelsea legend out of the running for the Hoops job before any substantial links have even been reported.
Picture the scene.
It’s Lampard’s first day in the job at Celtic and he is faced with those quotes in a press conference.
There is no way he gets out of Celtic Park alive once Hoops fans realise how much he has raved about their Old Firm rivals in the past.
In theory, it would be good for Lamps to move to Scotland to rebuild his managerial career but if he has any sense he’ll wait until Gerrard moves on from Rangers unless he wants to face the wrath of the Celtic faithful.
After this shambolic season, the last thing Celtic fans will want is a manager who has been so open about his adoration for Rangers.
However, we would quite like to see how that move would do down.
In other Rangers news, this ex-BBC pundit claims the Gers will get a transfer done this month.
