Ibrox View: Gutless Derek McInnes fails Scott Wright with utterly shameful reaction to abuse

Derek McInnes has let Scott Wright down by failing to condemn Aberdeen fans who are abusing the midfielder for agreeing a pre-contract deal at Rangers.

On Monday, the Gers announced they would be signing Wright, 23, at the end of the season when his contract at Pittodrie expires.

However, fans of the Dons are furious with Wright’s decision to head to Ibrox and a disgraceful banner was hung up to show that after the news emerged of his move.

Unfortunately, that banner isn’t half of the abuse that Wright has received with a lot of the comments on Twitter far too hateful for us to reproduce on our website.

McInnes was asked about the abuse on Tuesday and completely failed to defend Wright’s move to Rangers.

When discussing the abuse, the Dons boss was quoted by STV as saying: “I can’t be surprised by that. I’m pretty sure Scott would have anticipated that as well.

“That’s something he has to deal with. I’m not surprised that a section of the supporters have voiced their feelings towards that as it is a tough one to take.”

McInnes’ comments are utterly shameful.

Why should a young, 23-year-old man be on the receiving end of such hatred and vitriol for simply moving football clubs?

Why is the abuse not surprising? It’s a very sad state of affairs when some of the abuse we’ve seen is classed as expected by the Aberdeen manager.

McInnes shouldn’t be pandering towards his own club’s fans here. He should have come out and strongly condemned those who abused Wright.

But the most shocking line in McInnes’ comments was him saying “that’s something he has to deal with”.

Why does Wright have to deal with it? Why does a young man have to see such horrible comments about him on social media from such a nasty group of people?

Why doesn’t anyone at Aberdeen help him out? Why isn’t a statement released to show support to someone who is still their player until the end of the season?

We saw how Aberdeen fans reacted to Ryan Jack joining us a few years ago and how horrible some of the abuse was that was aimed at him.

It shouldn’t happen. It’s not on and we expect a much better response from Aberdeen in the future when something like this happens.
