‘Absolutely unbelievable’: Ally McCoist delivers Gers reaction to new Celtic manager speculation
Ally McCoist has said it would be “absolutely unbelievable” if Frank Lampard was to take the manager job at Celtic and go head-to-head with Steven Gerrard.
But, as a Rangers fan, he hopes it doesn’t happen.
Lampard was sacked by Chelsea on Monday and talk has already begun about his next job. He has been installed as one of the frontrunners to take over from Neil Lennon at Celtic.
McCoist was asked on the Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Tuesday, 8.30am) if he would like to see it happen and he gave a very definite response: “No.”
“I know they hang on every word I say,” McCoist added, “so don’t do it, Frank, Jody… get yourself to the continent and enjoy it.
“It would be absolutely unbelievable. Gerrard is absolutely flying up here but he’s had a couple of years. I don’t think it’s a major surprise or shock we’re seeing this Rangers side do so well under Gerrard. It would be unbelievable if he [Lampard] came to Celtic.
“It would be great for Scottish football, joking aside. The general expectation is that Lennon will move on, whether it’s at the end of the season.
“I think Celtic will lose a number of players at the end of the season. There will be a rebuild project.”
Lampard different from Gerrard
McCoist obviously believes that Lampard would be a success at Celtic, despite his patchy record at Derby and then at Chelsea.
But Lampard spent a huge amount of money to bring players in at Chelsea and still managed to fluff his lines.
Gerrard has done things the right way at Rangers, building a squad slowly and steadily that has now dramatically changed the order in Scottish football.
We’re not sure that Celtic will have the same patience or long-build approach.
Do we think it might happen?
We still remember the day we woke up to stories that said Gerrard had been made favourite to take over the Gers job.
Many people scoffed but it became apparent quite quickly that there was substance to the speculation.
Would Lampard’s ego let him drop all the way down from Chelsea to Celtic? We’re not totally convinced by that.
