Rarely-seen Rangers star set to seal Ibrox loan exit – report
Rangers winger Glenn Middleton will join St Johnstone on loan for the rest of the season after seeing limited game time at Ibrox this season, according to The Courier.
The 21-year-old has made a solitary substitute outing in the Scottish League Cup this season and is understandably eager to see more minutes to continue his development.
Competing with the likes of Ryan Kent, Kemar Roofe and Ianis Hagi has proved a tough task for the Scotland U-21 international who spent last season with Hibernian and Bradford City.
He will head out on another temporary move as The Courier report he will move to St Johnstone on loan for the rest of the season.
They also say that Middleton is expected to train with his new team-mates on Monday and could be thrown straight into The Saints squad for their fixture against Aberdeen on Wednesday.
Middleton will be hoping the move is more successful than his stint in the Premiership with Hibernian where he made eight appearances in total after joining in August 2019 but none after October 30 before seeing his deal terminated.
Middleton minutes vital for development
In St Johnstone Middleton will be joining a club fighting relegation with Callum Davidson’s side sat in ninth place and only four points above Hamilton at the bottom.
However they have enjoyed an upturn in form and are now unbeaten in their last five matches, winning the last two of these.
It will be interesting to see where Middleton will operate with Davidson chopping and changing his shape this season.
Per Wyscout their two preferred formations in the Premiership have been 3-4-3 (selected 31% of the time) and 3-4-1-2 (25%).
In the former Middleton would be expected to line up on the left hand side of the attack but with the side enjoying success in the 3-4-1-2 in their last two games he will likely play in a more central role.
At the moment Middleton is sure to be happy to play anywhere with his development stagnating somewhat after a lack of action this season, so he will hope to accrue as many minutes as possible during the remainder of the current campaign.
