Exclusive: Alex McLeish questions Ibrox future of Rangers outcast after injury blow

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has questioned the short-term future of Rangers defender George Edmundson after it was confirmed he had undergone surgery.

The defender was set to be made available to leave Ibrox on loan this month, but injury appears to have scuppered any chance of that.

McLeish claims there is little-to-no chance of him breaking into the first-team in Glasgow, but he could stick around for the worst-case scenario.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “You don’t want to disrupt the momentum and nucleus of the team.

“It’s a tough one to change, a lot of the top clubs generally have got pairings that are playing together most of the season, so it remains to be seen how much action he will get.

“Of course you need to have everybody fit in case something goes horribly wrong to one of your mainstays.”

After Edmundson breached the COVID-19 rules earlier this season, Steven Gerrard made it clear that he wasn’t best pleased with the defender.

Conor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun have all been phenomenal this season, and are miles ahead of the former Oldham man in the pecking order.

Nikola Katic is also nearing his return from injury, and that will add another spanner into the works for Edmundson and his first-team chances.

The 23-year-old has only ever made seven appearances in the Scottish Premiership, and time will surely be running out on his Ibrox career.
